A RECENT lifestyle poll, conducting among 300 unmarried Bahrainis, was one of the funniest things I’ve read in a long time! The results of the Bahrain Centre for Studies and Research survey, published in full in the GDN, showed that looks come first for 70 per cent of Bahraini men while only 28pc of women want a handsome husband. Suddenly I’m having visions of gorgeously stunning supermodels on the arms of short, fat, hairy gorillas. Uh…you never see that in Bahrain… right?

The survey also showed that 61pc of Bahraini men would never marry a girl who had a previous relationship. I wonder how many of the men are responsible for these ‘previous relationships’ which render women so untouchable to them when it comes to marriage. Come on, guys! You’re choosing a mate here, not a second-hand car! There is much more to it than  ‘new’ and ‘used’! Still, I would have expected the figure to be closer to 90pc, so maybe there is hope after all…

                    "USED"
Incredibly, a whopping 41pc of women said they believed that love before marriage was not important! What’s important then? His star sign? Most of the ladies who gave this answer are obviously the more traditional types who are referring to arranged marriages. But I can’t help feeling disappointed because I always thought women were more romantic by nature. You learn something new everyday…

And too many of the people surveyed seemed to have celebrity fixations, saying they would like their brides to resemble some Arab singer or other. Well, to each his (or her) own I suppose but it was interesting to see Jennifer Lopez and Tom Cruise as the only non-Arab celebrities who made the list. I kind of understand why Lopez is on it because many Bahraini girls do resemble her (and are usually more beautiful) but the choice of Cruise is boring and clichéd. Women have been naming him on lists ever since his nauseating shower scenes with Val Kilmer in Top Gun way back in 1986. Get over it already…

Meanwhile, the number of shallow Bahraini men and women seems to be equally when it comes to marrying into money with 7pc of each admitting that wealth is a major preference. Well, at least they’re honest…

A startling 80pc of the men polled said they wanted women who wear headscarves while only 5pc said they would not like their wives to wear one. I personally found this to be the most surprising statistic of all because to me abayas have always been an instant turn-off. Regarding skin colour, 44pc of men wanted to marry fair women followed by brown-skinned (31pc) and ‘dark complexion’, which presumably means black, (3pc). Female preferences are 13pc, 48pc and 9pc respectively. Hmmm….

Around a third of the gentlemen surveyed like women with dark hair while only 9pc prefer blondes. Who says blondes always have more fun? But it’s important to take all this with a grain of salt because the poll was only conducted among 300 people, aged 18 to 25, divided equally between the sexes. This, by no means, is an exact representation of the entire population, and survey questions can be leading. Also, it’s much easier to say ‘yes’ and ‘no’ to hypotheticals than it is in real life. It’s an interesting insight into the way people think, but maybe we need a poll to learn how honest people are when they take part in polls?
